After the Migraine 2024
The last migraine was a doozy, and you are feeling woozy. Most of the pain is gone but now you feel tired, light sensitive, still nauseated and can’t even think of food, head sensitive even to just touch, and more lethargic than ever, like you haven’t slept in days.
This is an article by Britt Talley Daniel MD, retired member of the American Academy of Neurology, Migraine textbook author, Podcaster, YouTube video producer, and Blogger.
The best treatment for migraine is:
A. Live the migraine lifestyle.
Lifestyle Issues For Migraine Prevention are important and should be performed by all persons with Migraine. The important lifestyle issues are:
Limiting Caffeine
Eating regularly
Getting regular physical exercise
Getting regular sleep
Learning to deal with stress
Avoiding food triggers
Avoiding your known Migraine triggers
Checking barometric pressure levels
Keeping a Migraine diary
The lifestyle suggestions don’t just help Migraine, they also improve general health and longevity.
B. The treatment for Migraine is: Doing the Lifestyle, taking Acute therapy medication at onset of a Migraine attack, and starting Preventive medication for Migraine patients with frequent attacks.
These ideas are basic, dogma, like, they have got to be done.
The lifestyle suggestions don’t just help Migraine, they also improve general health and longevity.
C. Treat at onset
Treat all migraines early, like at the beginning, I mean at the very slightest hint of a migraine. Do you get the point that I want you to TREAT EARLY?
D. Treat with a triptan. Triptans are still the best drugs for treating a migraine at onset, for acute migraine therapy. They are better than Ditans, DHE, or CGRP blockers.
There are seven triptans and several are now generic, like sumatriptan, which is sold over the counter. Name brand drugs are more expensive but may be partially paid for by your health insurance. and require a doctor to prescribe them.
Name brand drugs change to generic drugs when their patent runs out and this is usually after several years. Generic drugs are cheaper but also need a doctor’s prescription.. Some drugs, like sumatriptan, are now available at the drugstore without a doctor’s prescription. Drugs like this are called “over the counter.”
Generic drugs have to be the same chemical as a name brand drug, except for the filler, which is inert.
An example here is Imitrex, the generic of which is sumatriptan. Imitrex was the first triptan treatment for migraine and which came out in its best, fast high dose model as subcutaneous 6mg dose. Imitrex generic is now a tablet sold over the counter and named sumatriptan. It is available as 50 and 100 mg tablet-9 tablets for $19.99 without a doctor’s prescription..
E. After the migraine symptoms may be:
Migraine hangover-postdrome
Mental fog
Body aches, a stiff neck
Lethargy
Head sensitivity to touch
Nausea
Light sensitivity
Sound sensitivity
Trouble concentrating
Treatment for a migraine hangover
Plenty of rest
Adequate hydration, eat well-balanced meals
Light activity-stretching, walking
Avoid your migraine triggers-stress, bright lights, loud noises.
Summary
So, all you migraineurs, take the advice here and treat early with a triptan and you will live with migraine better.
